Going the extra mile to support vulnerable women
Women clients in Carr-Gomm look set to benefit from the fundraising efforts of staff member, Bukky Jackson, who is running the Adidas Women’s Challenge next weekend.
Bukky is usually seen organising activities to encourage its clients to get involved in the organisation. On September 6th 2009, she will be donning her shorts to raise money for Carr-Gomm’s female clients.
"I'm usually running training sessions rather than 5km races," says Bukky. "I’ve had to put some effort into getting ready for Sunday. The women I work with are stretching themselves so I thought I should do the same!"
The hard work will all be worthwhile if Bukky succeeds in raising £500 for the women that Carr-Gomm supports. "Many of these women face hardship caused by illness, domestic abuse, debt or mental health problems. Some are isolated and are unaware of what is available in their local community," Bukky explained. "But with some encouragement they discover talents, confidence and interests they never knew they had.”
Women’s groups are already opening doors for Carr-Gomm’s female clients in London and Scunthorpe. Participants of both groups plan regular activities, with staff support, which develop skills and confidence. The London group has so far visited a local museum, received health and safety training, and spent the day at a local college.
If Bukky hits her fundraising target, the groups can expand and involve more women in their activities. "I’ve had lots of support from my colleagues, clients friends and family. I hope other people will sponsor me if they can," said Bukky. "Even a few pounds will make a difference and mean Carr-Gomm can continue its invaluable work supporting women and their families.”
