Photography Exhibition - Who Do You Think You Are?
What happens when you get a dozen or so people together, throw in a photographer and full access to a theatre costume department and ask the question: Who do you think you are?
The result is an exciting and vibrant photography exhibition showcasing the dreams and aspirations of clients after having been given full access to West Yorkshire Playhouse’s costumes.
The exhibition is on until 4th August at the Darlington Arts Centre and moves to the West Yorkshire Playhouse on 3rd – 30th September.
The exhibition is a culmination of a three month photography project, led by photographer Ruby Porter, in which clients were given simple cameras, taught basic photographic techniques and encouraged to take photographs with the emphasis on being creative rather than technical.
Many of the clients who took part in the project have been disadvantaged by illness or have experienced crises in their lives, for example, homelessness, mental health, drugs or violence.
Kate O’Donnell, Client Involvement Officer, said: “The photography project has been fantastic! It has helped clients to build their self-confidence and focus on their futures and what they want, or would like to achieve, instead of focusing on their problems. Over the last couple of years we have been working with West Yorkshire Playhouse to provide Carr-Gomm clients with creative and fun experiences. We’re very grateful to their costume department who provided the costumes. It was a fun and creative way for clients to explore their hopes and dreams. Dressing up and thinking of a brighter future has inspired our clients to think beyond their present situation and look forward to a positive new future.”
