Safe house offers refuge
Two new homes in Teignbridge are set to provide people experiencing domestic abuse with secure, supported accommodation in the district.
The Safe House, a joint project between Teignbridge District Council and Teign Housing, is opening this month following extensive work to create two self-contained, secure flats which comprise it. The Safe House will enable victims of domestic abuse to live securely and independently, but with full support available to help them recover from the effects of domestic abuse.
Carr-Gomm staff will provide weekly practical and emotional one-to-one support based on the needs of individuals. Teignbridge Council will help provide housing advice and registration on the Devon Home Choice scheme for residents to help them prepare for when they move on from the scheme. Tenancies at The Safe House will be offered from 6 to 12 month terms, depending on individual circumstances.
The development of the secure accommodation has been carried out in consultation with the Police and other agencies to ensure it is a safe, secure and appropriate environment for victims of domestic abuse. It has been completed as part of ongoing work on housing issues by the Teignbridge Strategic Partnership (TSP), a group of leading public, private and community organisations which work together to achieve common aims and objectives. The project has been made possible with a grant of £40,000 from Teignbridge Council and funding of £100,000, as well as the provision of the properties for conversion, by Teign Housing.
Cllr Ray Frost, Teignbridge Executive Spokesperson for Housing Services said: “Teignbridge has been working hard with its partners to develop this new facility, and it’s very welcome to be able to provide additional help to victims of domestic abuse.
“We’re committed to providing a safety-net of advice and support for those in need, and it is my sincere hope that this new shelter will make a real difference in helping improve the lives of victims of abuse.”
John Moran, Local Services Manager, Carr-Gomm said: “Our aim is to help people recover from their experiences and rebuild their confidence and support them in the choices they make to make positive choices for the future.”
