Carr-Gomm – transforming care and support

Homeless projects

Carr-Gomm has a number of projects that cater specifically for people who are homeless, in Hastings, Birmingham, West London and Manchester.

Examples:

Victoria House is based in Openshaw, Manchester, and offers support to 45 people who have experienced rough sleeping. It is particularly innovative because of its ability to accept tenants who have pet dogs - often a factor for people refusing to accept places in support projects.

Grants from the Learning and Skills Council and European funding has enabled us to expand the work we do at Victoria House. Basic skills (numeracy and literacy) are taught through informal and formal means, and are integrated with life skills training, such as cooking. Other activities on offer to clients include a women's group, a men's group, volunteering opportunities, courses run by the local college and visits from local health practitioners.

In Hastings we have a homeless project housing 12 people who have recently been homeless, helping them to develop the skills they need to sustain their own tenancy.

We are working in partnership with St John Ambulance who run a lottery funded project providing primary health care, podiatry and educative services to people in Carr-Gomm projects and other people who are currently or at risk of being homeless and in temporary accommodation around Hastings and St Leonards on Sea.
